MJCQ amphibious jeep and vehicle Swim-In Part 2

(Part 2). Amphibious vehicle swim-in held over the first long weekend in winter. Arrival at the campsite was Saturday afternoon, after a 5 hour drive. Sunday morning was a 110km (70 mile) drive through local state forest in the jeeps, weapons carrier, half-ton Dodge, GPA seep. That afternoon saw the amphibs (three WW2 Ford GPA’s, Coot, Amphicat) in the water. On Monday we packed up and stopped in at a club member’s place to see his WWII Kenworth wrecker, which we all had a ride on. This footage combined from my own (camcorder and still camera in movie mode) and clubmember Bob’s video. Thanks Bob!

WWII jeep rainforest trip

A weekend trip over the 17th and 18th November 2007 by the Military Jeep Club of Queensland through some of the temperate rainforests and forests of northern New South Wales, Australia.

Six vehicles came along, all World War Two vintage. They were:
3 Ford GPW jeeps
2 Willys MB jeeps
1 Dodge WC-52 Weapons Carrier

We met at the clubhouse at 6:30am on a rainy Saturday morning. The rain didn’t clear up until we we had done about 50 or 60 miles. After that it was overcast but still quite warm. We camped overnight in a public camping ground and toured some more forests and national parks on the Sunday before returning home.

This footage was taken with two different cameras – a camcorder and a digital still camera in movie mode. Hence the drop in picture and sound quality here and there. I also compressed it a lot to fit within YouTube’s upload limitations.

Navy Jeeps, Korea, “The Bridges at Toko-Ri”

Clips from the 1955 movie with William Holden and Grace Kelly, filmed on the aircraft carrier CV34, U.S.S. Oriskany, flying F9F Panther jets. The jeeps were modified CJ2A/CJ3A’s that ran an APU (auxiliary power unit) off of the jeep’s PTO to start the jets. They were refitted to operate like forklifts to steer on the tight area of the flightdeck.

Autobiography of a Jeep — Tehachapi Loop (Jeepin’)

Commissioned for the war effort, by 1943 the “General Purpose” (Jeep) had become so much of a military mainstay, it’s hard to believe it wasn’t around before that.

It hasn’t changed a whole lot visually, it’s as distinctively ugly-utility as ever.

The movie is an old rah-rah piece, and is really well done. Its done with the assumption that if the Jeep had a voice and personality, it’d be that of one of the homey dog faces that made up much of our armed forces.

And who can argue that? The military Jeep proved so popular, it went into the civilian trade, and of course, into legend as the “Forty Nine Dollar Jeep”.

Did anyone ever get one of those? Surplussed Jeeps for a mere fifty bucks, plus shipping and handling? I always figured if they did exist, they’d arrive as a box of greasy parts of mostly Jeep and possibly refrigerator components.

The music was composed for the clip, and didn’t actually have a name until I decided it sounded like driving down along the Tehachapi Loop in California, off road.

Using the Yamaha drum machine (I think he actually programmed it this time), the Roland GR-20 guitar synthesizer, and the Jazz bass, Tedd composed a swinging cool jazz piece that just keeps on going forward.

The piano is unruly, the saxophone runs merrily outside of what the actual instrument can do, the bass charges along solid as, well, a Fender Jazz bass. It’s as fun as a fairly smooth dirt road in the desert and finding out where it goes.

The entire movie is available at the Internet Archive, and you really need to see it if you’re a fan of Jeeps. It’s funny and fascinating, and about ten minutes uncut.

Call it a craze for vintage military vehicles! ‘Willys’ jeeps, which are World War II relics refurbished and refitted with modern accessories are the haute four-wheeled beauties preferred by Punjab’s youth these days. These Jeeps, which had become an icon in the 70’s and 80’s are back in demand after a hiatus of a few decades. The connoisseurs of these jeeps do not include just Indians, but also wealthy NRI youths.
